Interesting to see Britain from an immigrant perspective — Z's diary in English that slowly improves, full of logical inconsistencies in the language and the culture that natives stop noticing.
The shoe scene stuck with me. She tells her language teacher her parents might have made the teacher's shoes back in China — said innocently, met with embarrassment and something like disgust. There's a lot of snobbery in Britain, sadly. I think much of it is socially constructed; you can't blame individuals too much, especially older generations who grew up inside it. Still, I winced.
I liked Z. Some of the romance dragged. Finished feeling fond of her and slightly sheepish about home.
